    A little one, inspecting toys.

As every year during this season, the toy stores of town turn into a swarm of parents that try to find those toys that, some days afterwards, Santa Claus or the Three Kings are in charge of delivering to children in Aguilas and as every year, there are a number of toys that are the stars and are present in all their Christmas letters.

In this occasion and “for the second year in a row”, all those toys that belong to the Lunnis are the ones most sold” declared the managers of Juguetoon,
always followed up closely by the ever present Barbie that this season is accompanied by her horse Pegasus. Other toys desired by the little ones in Aguilas are those that have something to do with films and cartoon shows and for this reason “the singer chick Little Chicken is one of the most popular toys” informed the manager of Juguetes Sánchez.

Little Chicken is accompanied by all those plush animals that belong to the Winnie the Poo stories though these are prefered by younger children.
Little boys are always faithful to classic toys and they coincide, in a great many cases, with the same type of toys that, years ago, were also wanted by their parents.

This means that the traditional playmobil and Action Man are still favourites though they have been around for long “Classic toys come back every year and they are still sought after” they declared in the toy store Juguetes Sánchez..

38 children recreate a live Nativity Scene

        In the Plaza de España

A total of 38 children joined in, last Sunday, in a recreation of a Nativity Scene that was promoted by the Town Hall´s office of Feasts and included in the Christmas activities program. This is the second year that it has taken place in the Plaza de España.

The little actors and actrices, that played a part in the biblical scene, were choosen from almost a hundred aspiring candidates by the director Juan Francisco Sánchez, who declared to be very satisfied with the success that this initiative has enjoyed, after an interval of twenty years.

The staging, as logical, develops in Bethlehem, with the help of a number of different scenery sets. We were able to visit not only the traditional manger, but also King Herod´s palace, the Inn, Saint Joseph´s joinery, a river, an oven to bake bread in the traditional manner and some houses. All these sets were made in cardboard by a local company called Arteline.

We could not say exactly how many children were crowded in the Plaza de España to be able to witness such a singular event. They all thronged to be able to see “live and in person” the birth of Jesus.

Folklore and tradition in La Cuesta de Gos

The party, that was celebrated on Christmas Day, started with a fond homily in the local chapel

          Moments of the popular party.

Folklore and popular tradition had an appointment in the party that was celebrated on Christmas Day in Cuesta de Gos. This celebration has been performed, uninterrupted, for more than thirty years in this district of Aguilas.
Mass was celebrated at half past one in the chapel of La Cuesta de Gos, that, by the way, has had for the past three years a statue that pays tribute to someone who had and has roots in this mining area: Francisco Rabal.

After the homily and the bidding for the honour of carrying the Banner and the Throne, the religious procession of la Virgen del Carmen (Our Lady of Carmen), took place for some twenty minutes and they covered a small area around the chapel.

During the afternoon, a party was celebrated in the canteen-bar of La Cuesta de Gos. The room was filled to overflowing. The first afternoon´s activity was the Ribbon Race. Afterwards, we were all invited to see the traditional dances and also to enjoy Christmas songs thanks to the Cuadrilla of La Cuesta de Gos. (A Cuadrilla is normally, a non profesional group of friends that sing and dance folklore). Everyone present also enjoyed raffels, bidding of homemade products, improvised Flamenco singers, and those who were not there, were remembered.

We must remember that this type of popular parties take place in almost all districts in a similar way since these are precisely the areas where tradition and local folklore are still kept alive. Not only that, we must not forget that this survivial of atavistic folklore is not only our elder´s patrimony, there are many young people that participate in an active way in these celebrations.

A good example of all this is the recent formation, not too many years ago, of the Cuadrilla de la Marina de Cope, integrated by young women and men. They have always declared that their aim is to “maintain alive tradition”.
